Dance to Fight Depression
A recent study has indicated that dancing is one of the best forms of treatment for depression. This is something we already believe, but we’re happy to have science back our theory up! Dancing is one of the best ways to get out of your head and into your body to channel your feelings into movement.
Australian researchers have published a study that shows that the best form of exercise to treat depression is dancing. Dance beat out exercises like walking, jogging, yoga and strength training. Psych Central says “the mere act of dancing can lead to benefits such as increased neurotransmitter activity in your brain as well as improved self-esteem and enhanced mindfulness.” They cited that past studies also found that “dancing can take those with depression out of their heads, away from rumination and distressing cyclical thoughts, and ground them in the present. The endorphins and social connection that often arise from dancing also lead to generally improved moods.”
These are science backed results we can get behind! Here at TTB, we have prioritized our communtiy as dance is such a social thing, not only are you moving your body, but we’re connecting with others which can help combat depression and another epidemic- loneliness. We may start our fitness journey with physical results in mind; but we stay because of the way that we feel, and the connections we establish.
Feeling down or bored with your workouts? Maybe you just haven’t found the right one for you. Fitness is not a one-size fits all thing, however, maybe dance might be just the thing you’ve been searching for. Whether it’s done by yourself in your home with your favorite music, or in a studio among others, if dance makes you happy, keep on dancing, cause studies show it’s good for you!
